Black Fungus | COVID-19-associated mucormycosis

Black Fungus 

Mucormycosis refers to as black Fungus associated with covid 19 is a Fungal Infection a clinical manifestation sometimes referred to as ‘rhino-orbital-cerebral (ROC) mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis is Commonly infected Nose, Eyes, and Brain areas of humans. Covid-19 associated Black fungus has generally been rare.

It is not a communicable disease (doesn’t spread from person to person and is not contagious). The main risk factor of Black fungus is diabetes.

COVID-associated mucormycosis has especially affected people in India. The association also appeared in Russia.


Nasal blockage
Discharge from nose
Facial pain
Blurring of vision
Double vision or watery eyes


Maintain good hygiene and cleanliness in your surroundings.
Maintain oral hygiene care with mouthwash, povidone-iodine gargles.
Use sterile water for humidification while administering oxygen, there should be no leakage from the humidifier.
Steroids usage should be limited not more than necessary with strict blood glucose control.
Avoid unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antibiotics or antifungals, can result in growth of unwanted bacteria or organisms.

Infected Cases in India

Due to rapidly growing numbers of infected cases in India,  Govt. of Rajasthan declared it an epidemic on 19 May 2021.  There are other states also such as the Govt. of Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat Bihar, Telangana also declared it as an epidemic.

Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir UT also declared it an epidemic on 24 May 2021 under the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897.

In J&K UT, One death due to Black fungus, Whereas two more dead are Suspected of Black Fungus as well.

Black Fungus Cases  

The country has recorded 11,717 cases. While Maharashtra has reported 2,770 cases, Gujarat has logged 2,859 cases, Andhra Pradesh has registered 768 cases, Madhya Pradesh has recorded 752 cases, and Telangana 744 cases so far.
