By Kingshuk Kusari: The Indian Premier League 2023 came to a scintillating end with Chennai Super Kings lifting their 5th IPL trophy in a final ball thriller against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday, 30 May.
A long, three-day affair, the IPL 2023 had a fitting end to what had been a tremendous competition between 10 teams. Deep in the tournament, teams were not divided by a lot of points. In fact, the four play-offs positions were decided on the final league match-day of the IPL 2023 when GT defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The season was categorised by incredible performances with the bat and final ball thrillers, a trend that continued till the final of the tournament.
On that note, here are a few of the records that were broken in the IPL this year:
Sensational Batting Efforts
Indian Premier League 2023 saw the most number of centuries hit in a single season. A staggering 12 centuries were hit in the tournament, with Shubman Gill headlining the feat. Gill scored three consecutive centuries in IPL 2023, a first-of-a-kind feat in the history of the league. And who can forget Virat Kohli, who scored consecutive centuries to become the only player with 7 hundreds in IPL history!.

The IPL 2023 was a dream for batters. All teams enjoyed some sensational batting displays in venues like Mohali, Wankhede and for that matter Eden Gardens. The IPL saw the highest number of 200+ totals this season, with Lucknow Super Giants headlining the hammering with a 257-run total vs PBKS.

Another batting record, actually a couple of them. IPL 2023 saw a spike of runs scored in the first innings of the match. 183 was the average first innings total in IPL. Along the same lines, the run-rate also increased this season, to a whopping 8.99 runs per over.

Throughout the IPL 2023, the top batters of the team tried to maintain some consistency. At the top, the likes of Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill tried to target the correct bowlers and take the game deep. On the other hand, finishers like Rinku Singh and Heinrich Klaasen demolished the opposition with their high-quality hitting ability. IPL 2023 saw an unprecedented number of 50+ scores from batters – 153 to be exact, which was a mega rise from last season’s 118.
