MS Dhoni needs to go back and figure out what he needs to do: Robin Uthappa on CSK captain’s retirement call

By India Today Sports Desk: MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings captain, guided his team to their fifth IPL title. Instead of retiring on a high note, he decided to come back for another season if his body permitted.

Dhoni admitted that retiring after winning would be ideal but wanted to give his fans another season, even if it required hard work on his body for nine more months.

IPL 2023 Final, CSK vs GT Highlights

“If you see circumstantially this is the best time for me to announce retirement,” Dhoni said at the presentation after winning the final against Gujarat Titans. “But the amount of love and affection I’ve been shown wherever I’ve been this year, the easy thing for me would be to say, ‘Thank you very much’. But the tough thing for me is to work hard for another nine months and come back and play at least one more season of IPL. But a lot depends on the body, I have six-seven months to decide and it will be more like a gift from my side [to the fans]. It’s not easy for me but the way they’ve shown their love and affection, that’s something I need to do for them.

“You do get emotional for a simple fact that it’s the last part of my career and I think it started over here when I was playing the first game [of IPL 2023]. I just walked out and the full house was chanting my name. My eyes filled with [tears] and I just stood there in the dugout for a while, and I took my time and I realised that I want to enjoy it and not take the pressure. I think it was the same thing in Chennai, when I played my last game there, but it will be good to come back and play whatever I can.”

DHONI NEEDS TO MANAGE HIS BODY

Dhoni’s former CSK teammate Robin Uthappa stated that the ‘Captain Cool’ needs to go back and figure out what he needs to do to ensure his body is fit. Dhoni played all the matches of the IPL 2023 despite suffering from a left knee injury. He made the IPL 2023 worth watching for his fans with his 10 sixes. He scored 104 runs off just 57 balls at a strike rate of 182.45 in the tournament.

“The thing also isâ€æ he has not stopped enjoying the game. He has the most fun when he is on the field when he is keeping. His knee, he knows he has an injury. It’s not a matter of enjoyment or a lack thereof. It’s actually about his body being fit enough and he wants to play. It’s about going back and figuring out what he needs to do.. Maybe surgery or rehab. Figure that out and then he will take a call,” Uthappa said on JioCinema.

CSK clinched a record-equalling fifth IPL title in the rain-affected 2023 final, defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets. The summit showdown, which was pushed to the reserve day due to heavy rain, witnessed an electrifying performance by Sai Sudharsan, who smashed 96 off just 47 balls, propelling the Titans to a commanding total of 214 for four.

However, rain interrupted play, and CSK was set a revised target of 171 in 15 overs. In a nail-biting finish, CSK managed to chase down the target on the last ball, thanks to Ravindra Jadeja’s heroics (15* off 6).

Prabhas-starrer Adipurush is one of the most anticipated films of the year. The film stars Prabhas as Lord Ram, Kriti Sanon as Sita, and Sunny Singh as Lakshman. In the film, Saif Ali Khan will be seen playing Ravan. On May 29, the second song from Adipurush was launched, titled Ram Siya Ram and it has become an instant hit. Sachet Tandon lent his voice to the song.

On Monday, Prabhas took to his Instagram account and shared the song. His caption read, “The soul of Adipurush Ram Siya Ram #RamSiyaRam full song out now! Link in Bio. #Adipurush in cinemas worldwide on 16th June.”

Many people have been moved by the song, as evidenced by their social media reactions. On Twitter, eager audiences who had been anticipating this song expressed their love for it. One user wrote, “The two songs “Ram Siya Ram” and “Jai Shri Ram” have completely elevated the movie Adipurush to another level. #Adipurush #RamSiyaRam.” Another user commented, “Can’t remember if any other song ever gave me such goosebumps. Playing on loop #RamSiyaRam Hats Off to  @manojmuntashir and #Saket-Parampara.” A third user wrote, “Glad to hear such an iconic song after a long time. It is no less than a masterpiece, loved it.”

On May 20, the film’s first song, Jai Shri Ram, was released at a song launch. The song has grossed 98 million views in less than 10 days. The music is by Ajay-Atul, and the lyrics are by Manoj Muntashir Shukla.

Helmed by Om Raut, Adipurush is a mythological drama based on the epic Ramayana. The film is gearing up for a grand release on June 16 in multiple languages. The film was earlier postponed due to criticism over the visual effects and computer graphics.

The film carries forward the virtues of Prabhu Shri Ram, which entail Dharma, courage, and sacrifice, as rightly reflected in the elegant poster. Before its theatrical release, the movie will have its world premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

IPL 2023 Final: Changed my technique for death overs, says Shubman Gill after winning Orange Cap

By India Today Sports Desk: Gujarat Titans opening batter Shubman Gill said that he changed his technique for the death overs while receiving his Orange Cap award for finishing as the top-scorer of IPL 2023. Chennai Super Kings beat GT by five wickets in a last-ball thriller in the IPL 2023 Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

IPL 2023: Full Coverage | Points Table

Speaking after the match, Gill said the award means a lot to him, adding that his hard work is going in the right direction. Gill scored 890 runs in 17 matches to finish as the top-scorer of IPL 2023.

“The award means a lot. My hard work was going in the right direction for me but unfortunately I couldn’t win what was a hell of a game,” said Gill.

He went on to say that he changed his technique for the death overs, which served him well in IPL 2023. Gill scored 39 runs off 20 balls, smashing seven boundaries to help GT post 214 for 4 in the first innings.

“It started well. I was getting those starts but was getting out on 40s, 50s and 60s and by the business end of the tournament I converted those starts. I practiced a lot and changed my technique for the death overs,” Gill added.

The 23-year-old said all his centuries in IPL 2023 were different from another. Gill scored three centuries in IPL 2023, even smashing two back-to-back tons against SunRisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“All the hundreds were different from one another, one was while chasing and the one against Sunrisers was much about control. One was knowing the situation and taking the opposition and I think I picked up the right bowlers at the right time and for any batter it is important to anticipate and I think that’s what I did well in that inning,” said Gill.

CSK beat GT by five wickets to lift their fifth IPL title, and go level with Mumbai Indians as the most successful team in the competition.

MS Dhoni admits he had tears in his eyes as CSK captain recalls fairytale IPL 2023 campaign

By India Today Sports Desk: MS Dhoni admitted he had tears in his eyes after he heard his name being chanted by the crowd in the opening match of the 2023 Indian Premier League against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 31. Nearly two months later, as Chennai Super Kings defeated the Titans in the season finale to win their fifth IPL crown, Dhoni revealed he was emotional in the last phase of his career.

MS Dhoni had announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket in 2020 and since then there has been constant speculation over his future in the Indian Premier League. However, Dhoni continued to delight his fans by coming back year after year and finally on Tuesday, after CSK won their fifth IPL title, the venerable captain promised to play the IPL next summer too.

IPL 2023 Final, CSK vs GT Highlights

When asked after the match if he would retire or play in 2024, MS Dhoni said the easier decision would be to hang his boots but he wanted to push his body for another season of the IPL as a gift to his fans who have poured in huge numbers in stadiums across the country as Chennai Super Kings completed another successful captain. This was the 10th time in 14 editions that they reached the final.

“The way they’ve shown their love and affection, I think that’s something (coming back in IPL 2024) I need to do for them. You do get emotional simply because it’s the last part of my career, it started over here and the first game when I walked down everyone was chanting my name. My eyes were full of water and I just stood there in the dugout for a while,” Dhoni told STAR Sports. “I realised I want to enjoy this. It was the same thing in Chennai, it was my last game over there but it will be good to come back and play whatever I can. I think they love me for what I am, they love that I am so grounded, I don’t try to portray something I’m not. Just keep it simple.”

The biggest relief for fans of Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni came when the captain confirmed he wasn’t going to retire after a fifth IPL tile as many had speculated throughout the season.

“Looking for an answer? Circumstantially if you see, this is the best time to announce my retirement. But the amount of love and affection I have been shown wherever I have been this year, the easy thing would be for me to say “Thank you very much”, but the tough thing for me is to work hard for another 9 months and come back and play at least 1 more season of IPL. A lot depends on the body, I have 6-7 months to decide. It will be more like a gift from my side, it’s not easy for me but that’s a gift,” Dhoni said.

MS Dhoni became the first cricketer to play 250 IPL matches. He has now led CSK to 10 IPL finals, winning five of them. As a member of the Rising Pune Supergiant, he had also played the IPL final in 2017.

MS Dhoni battled a dodgy knee in the 2023 IPL but he was super sharp behind the wickets and hit 10 sixes in the season to bring back memories of the golden times when he was the most feared finisher in the shorter formats of the game. He came out to bat with CSK almost nearing the finish line in the final against GT but he fell to Mohit Sharma for a golden ball duck.
