Sabalenka on facing Ukrainian Kostyuk in French Open 2023: Don’t want to waste energy on this kind of stuff

By India Today Sports Desk: Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka is set to kick off her campaign for a second Grand Slam title at the French Open with a politically charged match against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk on Sunday. However, Sabalenka remains focused on her game and refuses to be affected by any negative sentiments surrounding the match.

Kostyuk had announced that she will not shake hands with opponents from Russia and Belarus due to their perceived lack of condemnation regarding the invasion of Ukraine. Belarus has become a crucial base for Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.

In response to Kostyuk’s stance, Sabalenka stated that she doesn’t want to waste her energy on such matters, emphasising that it is not her concern. She acknowledged that there will always be people who love or hate her and expressed indifference towards any negativity directed at her.

“I don’t want to waste my energy on this kind of stuff. This is like, it’s not about — it’s none of my business. So if she hate me, okay. I can’t do anything about that,” Sabalenka told reporters ahead of the tournament,” Sabalenka said.

“There is going to be people who loves me, there is going to be people who hates me. If she hates me, I don’t feel anything like that to her.”

For Sabalenka, her aspirations extend beyond just winning the French Open. Since her victory at the Australian Open in January, she has been steadily closing the gap on Iga Swiatek’s position as the top-ranked female player. Sabalenka even defeated Swiatek in the Madrid clay tournament, showcasing her readiness to progress further in the tournament and potentially claim the number one spot.

While Sabalenka claimed she isn’t fixated on rankings, she eagerly anticipates the possibility of becoming the world’s number one player. She believes she has made significant improvements and possesses all the necessary qualities to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

“Yes, I think so. I think I improved a lot and I have everything to be number one,” Sabalenka said when she was asked if she was ready to be the new number one.
